Re-Bloggin’ From ‘da Cornfield Alley

deer

My mom and dad acquired a pretty amazing SLR camera that allows them to capture intimate and expansive moments from their own backyard, located somewhere in the rural eastern parts of North Carolina. I have always looked forward to getting their updates of the wildlife in the area — witness the deer by the pond, above, which my folks think will be having twins — and general updates on the seasons and progress of the landscape.

Above, Lil E, has taken over where the hen, Ruby, left off. Ruby was attacked by a possum a few weeks ago, and bore the brunt of defending her babies. Lil E survived the attack (raising the alarm call, waking my parents to the situation late one night) and has become the leader of the coop. He has raised 10 of the 15 chicks (a few have passed due to the usual: hawks, foxes, etc.) and is now confident in his role. And much nicer, I have to say, than his beautiful yet vicious predecessor, Earl, who would chase us around the backyard.
