Proto-Gross: The Art of Arcimboldo and the Grotesque Genre

Giuseppe Arcimboldo, the 16th century Italian painter, has work featured in the KH Museum, Vienna, through late June 2008.
Arcimboldo is well known for creating images of people’s faces using fruit, vegetables, books, tools and other objects. His work was popularized in the twentieth century when the Dadaists and Surrealists cited him as a forebear.
The grotesque genre is not a phenomena relegated to the pre-modern era: Count artists like Helen Chadwick and Cindy Sherman.
